Is Narinig Mo Ba a Horror Game?

Yes. Narinig Mo Ba is a short psychological horror game, even though it opens like a cosy sari-sari store simulator. Its creators call it "a story-driven psychological horror game disguised as a cozy sari-sari store simulator". The unease comes from conversations, music and sudden sounds, not from anything you fight or flee. This guide explains the tone of Narinig Mo Ba without spoilers, lists what to expect and suggests ways to play comfortably.

A gentle-looking setting

The game puts you behind the counter of a sari-sari store, the small neighbourhood shop that sells everyday goods in single portions across the Philippines. In the build on this site, you look around the shop, find what each customer asks for and take their pesos. The first orders in the story files are ordinary: a ₱10 coffee stick, ten candies, two packs of noodles and a can of corned beef.

Everything in Narinig Mo Ba is drawn to look friendly. The shelves hold parody brands with cheeky names, such as Menopause Menthol candy for ₱1, "Miss mo?" biscuits for ₱12 and a SKIBIDI chocolate drink for ₱15. Visitors call you Ate (older sister), Tita (auntie) or Mare, the way neighbours do.

The main menu of Narinig Mo Ba shows a painted "Soda Soda" shop sign above the title, with the tagline "a sari-sorry story". That pun on sari-sari store quietly hints at the tone. The creators' release page tags the game Cute, Short and Horror all at once, and the contrast is deliberate: they describe a horror game "disguised" as a cosy shop.

Psychological horror

The horror in Narinig Mo Ba is psychological. You never fight, hide or run; the controls are for looking around, serving and replying. Instead, the unease grows through what your customers say over the six days of four visits in the story files, and through the way the neighbourhood's mood changes as the days pass. The scripts turn each day from daylight to night after the second visit.

You also listen more than you steer. In this build's story files each conversation is a fixed list of steps, so whichever reply you pick, the next line and the order of events are the same. That can make the tension feel closer, because the story arrives whether you are ready or not.

In the player comments we read on the creators' page, one player who had not read the description was surprised by the turn, another did not expect it to be scary, and another said the cute art still managed to feel frightening. These are individual comments from a sample of 48, not a survey, but they match how the creators describe Narinig Mo Ba.

Sound and unease

Sound does much of the work in Narinig Mo Ba. The files pair ordinary visits with background music and shop ambience, and switch some later visits to a separate horror track, at times with a looping heartbeat and a sudden "jump" sound effect. Occasionally the music drops out while someone is talking, which can be more unsettling than any noise. The loudest cues, with violins and heavy banging, come late in the story.

A few players in the same comment sample singled out the music as a highlight. If sudden sounds bother you, that is also the part to prepare for.

Your browser may keep Narinig Mo Ba silent until you click or tap inside it. Set a comfortable volume before the first day begins, rather than in the middle of a tense visit.

Spoiler-free content notice

The creators' release page shows no age rating or content warning, and this website does not assign one. The list below describes what the story files contain without revealing how the story unfolds.

  • Sudden loud sounds: a jump-scare sound effect, loud banging and a looping heartbeat.
  • Tense music: abrupt shifts to a horror track, and moments of near-silence.
  • Death: references to a death and an investigation.
  • Alcohol: customers buy beer, including a child sent to buy it for a parent. You can tell her that her father should buy it himself.
  • Gossip and conflict: neighbourhood gossip, talk of a family custody dispute and suspicion cast on a neighbour.

If you are deciding for a younger player, go through this list with them before they play Narinig Mo Ba.

Comfort and accessibility

  • Controls. Day 1 shows a tip across the window with the mouse controls; the how-to-play guide explains the rest.
  • Volume. Start low. Sudden sounds can feel sharper through headphones than through speakers.
  • Breaks. The build's scripts contain no save system. Refreshing, closing the tab or restarting sends you back to Day 1, so leave the tab open if you step away. While the game runs, this site's own links open in a new tab, and the Browser help panel opens without reloading the game, though neither promises to pause it.
  • Camera. Moving the pointer to the edge of the view moves the camera, and some players found that disorienting. Keep the pointer away from the edges and use W A S D or the arrow keys instead; the painted signs on the front view show where each direction leads. On touch screens, the scripts indicate a choice between swiping and on-screen arrow buttons in Settings.
  • Motion. The website adds no moving backgrounds or animation of its own, but it cannot change how the game's camera moves.
  • Quitting. Escape does not close the game on this site; it only leaves the expanded view. The EXIT button on the game's main menu closes it.

Decide before playing

If the notice sounds manageable, take it one day at a time and open the player when you are ready. Would you rather know more first? The spoiler-free story guide and the sari-sari store guide explain the premise without giving anything away.

Browser & loading help

A failed check can come from the browser, device, driver or a managed setting. Choose your browser below.

Chrome could not start WebGL2. Update and relaunch Chrome, then check graphics acceleration if your desktop settings allow it.

  1. Open the menu, choose Help → About Google Chrome, install any update and select Relaunch.
  2. On a computer, open Settings → System and check that graphics acceleration is available. Relaunch after changing it.
  3. On Android, update Chrome and the system from their usual update screens instead.
  4. Do not force experimental flags. On a managed device the setting may belong to your administrator.

Update macOS, iOS or iPadOS to update Safari. If native fullscreen is unavailable, use the expanded view inside this page.

  1. Safari updates with the system: use Software Update on your Mac, iPhone or iPad.
  2. The game does not need any experimental Safari settings. If WebGL2 still fails, try an updated, supported device.
  3. On iPhone and iPad most browser apps use Safari’s engine (WebKit), so switching browsers there usually changes little. The WebGL2 check on this site is what counts.
  4. Where native fullscreen is not available, Fullscreen expands the player inside the page. Rotating is always your choice.

Update Firefox, review its Performance settings and restart. If WebGL2 still fails, try another supported device.

  1. Update Firefox, then open Settings and find the Performance section.
  2. Use the recommended performance settings, or review the hardware acceleration option if your system shows one. Restart after a change.
  3. Option names vary between versions and systems. Do not bypass the compatibility safeguards that block unstable graphics drivers.

Update Edge and restart it. On desktop, check graphics acceleration. A managed device may need help from its administrator.

  1. Open Settings and more → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge to install updates, then restart.
  2. On a computer, look under Settings → System and performance for graphics acceleration, then restart.
  3. An organisation can control this setting. Ask its administrator instead of trying to override the policy.

Opening help does not save or necessarily pause the game. Restarting may lose this session.
